I caught the bug about the same time I started driving with a learner’s permit. It was the mid-70s and my dad signed me up for a night class at a high school in Garland, Texas to learn somethingabout auto maintenance. He never said so, but I reckon his plan was to save money by having me doing the oil changes and tune-ups on our family’s vehicles (plus the lawnmower and edger too).
Shortly after, my Mom’s ’65 Mustang suffered an oil pump failure. One of my buddy’s Dad, Mr. J, said, “You can take it apart and rebuild it – I’ll help you.” This was a giant leap for me to go from replacing an engine air filter to rebuilding a Ford small block engine. We sent all the necessary parts out for cleaning, ordered the appropriate new parts, and waited patiently. Once everything arrived, I was ready to put it back together, but Mr. J was out of town on business. Remembering what he said to me the week earlier, “All you need to do is put it back together in reverse order from how we took it apart. You can do it.” There were very few nuts and bolts in the bucket when it was all put back together, and it started on the second attempt (had to rotate the distributor 180 degrees – wrong top dead center). Either as a hobby or to put food on the table, I’ve been turning wrenches and/or flipping the welding mask down ever since.
During my life, I spent about a decade in the Army, a decade as a school teacher and administrator, and a decade (total) as an automotive technician or fabricator. I have lots of life experience and still more to come. I love gaining knowledge and sharing it – teach ‘em to fish and all that. It’s nice when you can get paid for it to boot!
