Checking and Installing Windows Updates

  1. Open Internet Explorer.

  2. Select Tools >> (Microsoft) Windows Update.

    • If Windows Update has not been run previously, a pop-up will open asking to install the Windows Update software >> click Install.

  1. Move your cursor to any blank space on your desktop. Right-click on the blank space >> Click New >> Shortcut.

Restarting Your Computer

“Restarting” your computer does not mean just pushing the “off” button (which does not shut down your computer safely).

 

  1. On your keyboard, press the key with the Windows “flag” logo and the M key AT THE SAME TIME to minimize all programs that are open.

  2. Press the Alt and F4 keys on your keyboard AT THE SAME TIME to open the Shut Down screen.

Looking up the Version of Windows

  1. Right-click on the My Computer or Computer icon on your computer desktop.

If you do NOT have a desktop icon, click HERE

Click Start (or the circle with the Windows “flag” logo), then right-click My Computer or Computer.

To look up the amount of available space left on your computer’s hard drive:

  1. Click Start >> Computer or My Computer.

  2. Under Hard Disk Drives, right-click on Local Disk (C:).

    • Note: If you have customized your computer’s drives, it may be a different drive letter.

  3. Click Properties.

Turning Off IE7 Compatibility View for ALLDATA Websites

Some Internet Explorer 8 or 9 users have set up their browser to be compatible with sites that only work (or work better) using Internet Explorer 7.

  • As technology moves forward, fewer and fewer websites are compatible with IE7.  

  • Those with Compatibility View turned on will increasingly need to turn it off in order to view ALLDATA websites without any issues.

Updating the Time, Date and Time Zone

Follow the steps below for your version of Windows:
