#2022: "The Hardware Key Was Not Found"

 


Symptom:


A pop-up message displays:

  •  "The hardware key was not found. Please make sure it is correctly installed and securely attached to the PC port. Would you like to try to locate it again? (WARNING #2022)"

 


Possible Cause(s):


Warning 2022 can be triggered by a number of situations:

  • Windows Compatibility Mode is running.

  • The security key is not attached correctly to the computer port, or the port is not working correctly.

  • The program (device driver) that controls the security key is not installed or is installed incorrectly.

  • There is a problem with the security key itself.

 


Suggested Solution(s):


  1. Close the popup message.

    • On the warning message, click No.

    • On the Security Initialization Failed box that pops up, click OK.

  2. Make sure that Windows Compatibility is NOT in use.

    • Follow the instructions listed HERE, then click the Back button/arrow to return to this article.

    • Try reopening ALLDATA Repair (DVD).

      • If the error message appears again, click No >> OK and move to the next steps.

  3. Follow the steps for the type of security key that your shop uses.

USB port key

If you continue getting Warning #2022 after trying one solution, close the popup message (Click No >> OK) and move to the next solution.

A. Check the security key connection

  1. Make sure the security key is firmly plugged in to a USB port. 

    • USB ports may be on the front or back of the computer.

  2. If the security key was not plugged in to a USB port, plug it in and try restarting ALLDATA Repair (DVD).

B. Reinstall the security key

  1. Make sure there is a red light showing on the end of the key.

    • The light may be very faint. You may need to cup your hands around the key so that it's dark enough to see the red light.

    • If no light is showing, skip to Step C.

  2. If there is another USB port in the computer, unplug the security key.

    • If there is NOT another USB port, skip to Step C.

  3. Save this article as a Favorite/Bookmark, restart the computer and re-open this article. (Not sure how? See below.)

  4. Once the computer has completely restarted, plug the security key into a different USB port and make sure the red light is showing.

  5. Try restarting ALLDATA Repair (DVD).

C. Reinstall the security key driver software

Call ALLDATA Customer Support at 1-800-859-3282, option 2

 

Printer (parallel) port key

If you continue getting Warning #2022 after trying one solution, close the popup message (Click No >> OK) and move to the next solution.

A. Make sure the security key is firmly attached to the printer port on the back of the computer.

  • If the security key is loose, tighten it, then try restarting ALLDATA Repair (DVD).

B. If a printer is plugged in to the back of the security key, disconnect the printer from the key.

  • Once the printer is disconnected, attempt to open ALLDATA Repair (DVD) again.

  • If the program opens, plug the printer back into the security key.

  • If the program does NOT open, leave the printer unplugged and move to Step C.

C. Check to see if the device manager software is reading the security key. 

  • Follow the instructions for the version of Windows that you use.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start >> Settings (some computers don't have this step) >> Control Panel.

  2. Double-click System.

  3. In the System Properties window, on the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

  4. Click on the [+] next to Ports (COM & LPT) to expand the list.

  5. See if the list includes an option ending with (LPT1).

  6. Close all of the small popup windows by clicking the X in the upper-right corner of each window.

  7. If you DO have an (LPT1) option, skip to Step D.

  8. If you do NOT have an (LPT1) option, save this article as a Favorite/Bookmark, restart the computer and re-open this article. (Not sure how? See below.)

    • If the program opens, re-plug the printer into the back of the security key.

    • If the program does NOT open, leave the printer unplugged and move to Step D.

Windows Vista / Windows 7

  1. Click Start (the Windows "flag" logo) >> Settings (some computers don't have this step) >> Control Panel.

  2. Click System and Security.

  3. Under System, click Device Manager.

  4. In the Device Manager window, click on the [▷] next to Ports (COM & LPT) to expand the list.

  5. See if the list includes an option ending with (LPT1).

  6. Close all of the small popup windows by clicking the X in the upper-right corner of each window.

  7. If you DO have an (LPT1) option, skip to Step D.

  8. If you do NOT have an (LPT1) option, save this article as a Favorite/Bookmark, restart the computer and re-open this article. (Not sure how? See below.)
